Process Engineer

This position is responsible for providing process engineering support to the Mapleton, IL manufacturing plant. Develops new or improved products, processes, or techniques. Analyzes processes and recommends solutions and process improvements to achieve production, safety, and environmental goals. Provides input into production planning by analyzing processes and implementing operational changes to maximize efficient use of labor, materials, and equipment as well as reduce costs, increase production, and conserve energy. Leads or participates in capital project implementation. Responsible for the local process controls engineering support to the Mapleton, IL manufacturing plant.  This includes process controls troubleshooting, minor programming and process control optimization, with support from corporate resources.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide process engineering support for the day to day operations of manufacturing operations.
• Provide process control engineering support for the day to day operations of manufacturing operations.
• Maintain policies and procedures required to maintain, strengthen, and support ISO, Responsible Care, PSM and Mechanical Integrity programs.
• Assist in investigations and corrective actions for process and safety incident investigations.
• Provides leadership for establishing and maintaining a safe work environment.  Proactively addresses and corrects unsafe behaviors and conditions.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of process flow sheets and Process and Instrumentation Diagrams.,
• Participate in the preparation for and execution of process hazard analyses (PHA’s).
• Manage the design, specification and installation of small to medium process capital projects as required.
• Work closely with Quality department to ensure/establish quality system compliance in all required areas.
• Uses process data to recommend changes to ensure product quality, and process stability, efficiency, effectiveness, and to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Provide technical assistance to operations and maintenance to optimize, improve and troubleshoot processes and process equipment.
• De-bottleneck manufacturing processes through the optimization of existing equipment, improved use of resources or the acquisitions of new technology and equipment.

• Responsible for supporting line management to maintain regulatory compliance such as emission monitoring and waste disposal, report preparation and submission, licenses and permits.
• Interacts with local regulatory authorities, supported by plant management, PTSE and/or HSEQ resources.
• Trains and coaches operations personnel on specific items such as new and changed procedures, permits, etc.
• Supports the management of Responsible Care certification by maintaining and improving the relevant local procedures.
• Responsible for ensuring that incidents and near misses are appropriately reported and provides tools to increase knowledge/improve responses.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education: BS Chemical Engineering

Technical competencies

• Knowledge of standard engineering processes
• Experience the chemical industry, experience in batch operations preferred.
• Knowledge of and experience in programming and maintaining plant process control systems preferred.
• Must possess good written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, technical skills and a professional demeanor.
• Computer skills, with an understanding of maintaining and programming process control systems and programming.
• A moderate degree of mechanical aptitude.
• Familiarity with database, project management, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and safe work practices used in the chemical industry.
• Familiarity with Responsible Care and PSM standards preferred.
• Ability to perform root cause analysis and initiate corrective actions as required.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work in a timely manner and react well under pressure.
• Ability to write and maintain concise procedures and work instructions.
