    Overview of Position:

    This position is responsible for providing process operating labor at the Mapleton, IL manufacturing plant. The Chemical Operator will be required to carry out all operations that occur for their assigned process. These operations will include charging of raw materials, monitoring local devices, monitoring and operation of DCS controls, packaging of final product, other jobs required to manufacture the products, and other tasks as assigned by management. Any paperwork or log sheets needed for the process will be the responsibility of the Operator to fill in completely and accurately. Any training necessary to perform the duties of any of the processes will be conducted.


    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the assigned process(es) in order to facilitate troubleshooting of process, equipment, and quality problems.
    • Monitor and control the manufacturing process through standard operating policies, procedures, and job knowledge.
    • Assist in the maintenance of equipment to ensure safe and reliable service
    • Effectively communicate the status of the plant to fellow operators and management through the use of written, electronic, and verbal communication.
    • Identify areas to improve safety, environmental compliance, quality and productivity. Communicate ideas to appropriate personnel or use LANXESS practices such as work orders to address them.
    • Work safely and maintain a safe work environment. Follow appropriate safety policies and practices.       Identify unsafe conditions or actions and mitigate them to the extent possible. Notify Supervisor, the Plant Manager, or other management of such conditions
    • Follow and abide by policies and procedures required to maintain, strengthen, and support ISO, Responsible Care, PSM and Mechanical Integrity programs.
    • Assist in investigations and corrective actions for process and safety incident investigations.
    • Responsible for ensuring that incidents and near misses are appropriately reported.
    • Follow LANXESS environmental practices. Understand policies regarding containerizing, labeling and hazardous waste handling.
    • Work to continuously build and maintain trust and harmony with all other employees.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the assigned process units and material storage areas.


    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Education: High School Diploma or GED

    Technical competencies

    • Able to understand and operate a chemical process as well as the ability to analyze, plan and organize.
    • Show initiative, work well with others, be a team player, and have the ability to adapt to many different job functions.
    • Be capable of lifting 50 pounds and moving 600 pound drums with the aid of a manual drum cart.
    • Be capable of climbing stairs and ladders.
    • Be capable of using tools, some of which require turning and twisting, like wrenches, hammers and impact guns.
    • Be certifiable to wear a respirator.
    • Must obtain a fork truck license within 6 months of entering the position, which will require a valid state driver’s license or medical approval.      
    • Hazmat technician certification is desirable, but not required.
    • Must be able to read and interpret operating procedures and perform varied mathematical calculations.
    • Process certification will be required after job entry and training period.
    • A moderate degree of mechanical aptitude is preferred.
    • Experience the chemical industry, experience in batch operations preferred.
    • Knowledge of safety regulations and safe work practices used in the chemical industry is a plus.
    • Ability to understand and incorporate training received into job function.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work in a timely manner and react well under pressure.
